
[br][br]On November 11, poet Madeline DeFrees passed away at home in Portland, Oregon. She wrote and taught for more than 60 years, published eight books of poetry and two memoirs, and was awarded prizes and fellowships from the Academy of American Poets, the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Ms. DeFrees spent 38 years as a nun with the Catholic Congregation of Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, and taught at Holy Names College, before and after its move to Fort Wright.
